In 1996 I decided to make Asheville, North Carolina my home. Previously, I was living in Boone, North Carolina where I was lucky enough to experience the fine ales from Tumbleweed, Cottonwood Brewery and the generous selection of beers at  Peabody's Wine & Beer

My love of beer started long before I climbed the mountains of Appalachian State University. It started at a brewery that no longer exist, Loggerhead Brewing in Greensboro, North Carolina, who first opened its doors in April of 1990, and was the fifth brewpub in North Carolina.

"Loggerhead was a Bavarian purity (Reinheitsgebot) brewery. Introduced in 1516, the Bavarian purity law allows for only hops, barley, water and yeast to be used in the brewing process. Barring any seasonal or small batch brews, Loggerhead produced no fewer than four beers:

  • Gate City Ale, their most popular brew and a pale ale
  • General Greene Lager
  • Loggerhead Pilsner
  • Loggerhead Light

At the brewpub, a small 10 oz. mug of beer was priced at $1.65, a 15 oz. mug $2.25, and a full pitcher $7.25." - A brief overview of the Loggerhead Brewing Co.

The beer was remarkable and it changed my view on beer forever. Once you've had a real beer, the usual suspects just will not cut the cheese.

Since then I have visited breweries from all over the US and Europe, and luckily I can call Asheville my home. We are blessed with great water and exceptional brewers, and a culture that embraces visitors from all over the world.

My goal for AshevilleBreweries.com will be to visit all the breweries, interviewing and photographing each one.
